Learn the basics of topic settings and customizations

In this article, you will learn how to customize the topic page and change its settings.

Who can do this?

Each topic has its own permission settings. Performing the actions in this article requires the user to have edit permission for the specific topic. Click here to learn more about topic permissions.

Editing topic appearance

Editing the topic name and description can all be done within the topic page:

  1. Go to the topic page

  2. Click the … menu in the top-right corner

  3. Click Edit appearance

You are now in edit mode! You can click on the topic name and description to edit them. You can use rich formatting, such as post mentions, and hints in the description.

After editing, click Save to apply the changes.

Adding or editing a topic banner

To add or edit a topic banner:

  1. Go to the topic page

  2. Click the … menu in the top-right corner

  3. At the bottom-left corner of the topic banner area, click Edit appearance

  4. Click Add banner or Edit banner

  5. From here, you can add or edit an image using the following tabs:

    • Library: choose an image from our curation

    • Upload: upload your own image

    • Unsplash: search the vast Unsplash library to find an image

  6. After choosing your image, you can optionally resize and reposition it

  7. Click Save

✏️ Note: The banner area has a fixed 200px height, while the width is dynamic and adjusts based on the browser width. The image will be resized and centered to cover the entire banner area.

For best results, we recommend placing the most important part of your image in the center of the banner.

Removing a topic banner

To remove a topic banner:

  1. Go to the topic page

  2. Click the … menu in the top-right corner

  3. At the bottom-left corner of the topic banner area, click Edit appearance

  4. In the pop over, click Remove at the top-right corner

  5. Click Save to apply the change

Updating topic permissions 🔐

To change topic permissions:

  1. Go to the topic page

  2. Click the … menu in the top right corner

  3. Click Modify settings

From here, you can change the location of the topic with the Organize under... drop-down menu.

To change who can access a topic, use the Who can access... drop-down menu. To change who can edit a topic, use the Members can edit... drop-down menu.

Deleting a topic

To delete a topic:

  1. Go to the topic page

  2. Click the … menu in the top-right corner

  3. Click Delete topic

⚠️ Be aware: Deleting a topic will not:

  1. Delete its posts. If the posts in the deleted topic are not organized under any other topics, they will be moved to Unorganized. You can use the Content Map to reorganize them under relevant topics.

  2. Delete its subtopics. If the deleted topic is a top-level topic (a topic with no parent topic), its subtopics will become top-level topics. Otherwise, they will become subtopics of the deleted topic's parent.
