Your left sidebar in Slab is made up of sections that you can customize for your own personal use or your team's. Only you can customize your personal sections, and only admins can customize team sections. Admins cannot customize other users' personal sections.
What are sections?
Sections are an organized list of posts and topics that appear in the sidebar. You can choose which sections to show in your sidebar and in what order. Within each section, you can also choose the order that posts and topics appear. In addition to the section's name, you can customize its icon and color to give each section a distinct look.
Personal and team sections
Any user can create personal sections for their own use. These personal sections are only visible and editable by that user. Admins can create team sections and convert their existing personal section into a team section. Each individual teammate can choose to show or hide a team section in their sidebar, but only admins can edit the sections themselves, such as the name, icon, and which items included. These edits will affect all teammates using that section.
Including a post or topic in a section does not grant or change permissions. Teammates who do not have view access to a post or topic will not see it in personal or team sections. Similarly, if view access is lost or the post or topic gets deleted, it will no longer appear listed in sections for affected users.
Guests can't see or use team sections, but they can create and manage personal sections like any standard user.
Creating and managing sections
In your sidebar, hover over the name of any section, and click on the … button to show a menu option to Manage sections. From this modal, you can create new sections or modify existing ones. You can also toggle the eye icon to show or hide that section or use the drag and drop handles to reorder the section's appearance in your sidebar.
To edit a section, select it by clicking on its name from on the left panel of this Sidebar sections modal. The first section is automatically selected when you first open the modal. The section details will be shown on the right panel, where you can modify the icon, name, and included posts and topics items. Use the drag-and-drop handles to reorder items. To delete a section, click on the ... button next to the section's name textbox, and click Delete section.
All changes made in this Manage sections modal are a temporary preview until you click the Finalize and save button and confirm. This includes deleting any sections or changes made to team sections.
Various convenience actions are available throughout Slab to make immediate changes to a section, such as a post's … menu to add to a section. But these actions will only appear for personal sections. Team sections can only be modified from the Manage sections modal and only by admins.
All Topics, My Topics, and Integrations
Slab includes a few sections that are automatically maintained. While these sections generally can't be edited, individual users can choose to show or hide any of these in their sidebar, just like they can for regular sections.
All Topics - team section that lists all top-level topics. While the included topics are automatically maintained, their order can be customized by admins. Like any team section, updating the order will affect teammates who have All Topics visible in their sidebar.
My Topics - personal section that lists the topics that the user is a member of, either directly or through a group. Each user can personalize the order of these topics to their liking. This section is named just Topics for guests.
Integrations - team section that lists enabled integrations that are syncing posts, such as GitHub and GitLab. While guests can't see this section their sidebar, this does not prevent guests from seeing synced posts elsewhere if they have been granted access. This section is not editable.
Favorites and provisions
When a new user joins Slab, a personal section named Favorites is automatically created. This is a regular personal section that the user can then fully customize. It is not an automatically maintained section like All Topics.
Admins can configure which posts and topics are initially included in this Favorites section through provisions. Learn more about provisions here.
